Godliness part 3

Tonight , I will be teaching on Godliness.

Summary:

Godliness is a lifestyle that glorifies God. This is when you are intentional with your walk with God as you submit yourself to his will.

Godliness to me means to live a life that is pleasing to God. A life that honours his word and being conscious of the fear of God.

The bible states;

Proverbs 9:10 New International Version (NIV)

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Acknowledging God and understanding there is someone superior to you is the beginning of wisdom, to obtain wisdom one needs to be humble and submissive. And this is a key to Godliness.

I came across the term while reading proverbs – a book that is saturated with godly instruction. The book helps us differentiate between a wise person and a fool, a perverse person and a focused individual. In other words, for us to understand godliness, we need to understand what the direct opposite is.

Being carnally minded is the opposite of godliness. When one surrounds himself with his own lusts and desires without thinking about tomorrow. When someone has intentionally made themselves the Lord over their life. Many of us have been such in our lives, in different ways and different levels. Even when we knew believed in God but we wanted to be lukewarm and “enjoy life”.

The issue with being lukewarm is that God will spit you out. This is seen in

Revelation 3:15-17 New International Version (NIV)

15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

You need to be one or the other, there is no limbo. A person who seeks after godliness aims to live their life according to God’s standard. They aim to be renewed in his word and his spirit as they understand that the flesh and the spirit wrestle against each other:

Galatians 5:17 King James Version (KJV)

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

The key to all this is to understand how your flesh is an entity to God until you allow the spirit to lead. It should be crucified daily. And one of the ways we can do that is

  • by abiding in God
  • daily seeking after God’s word
  • meditate in his word
  • pray and fast
  • seek after the holy spirit
  • train yourself to listen after God and ask for the spirit of discernment
