The topic before me tonight is Confidence in yourself and God. I want to appreciate @Damola for the foundation already laid on this topic. She said ‘once you begin to understand your values in Christ that is when you will understand what true confidence is. Very deep stuff! Learnt a lot
When I was thinking through this topic, a question popped up in my heart, and that is, ‘would I rather choose to have confidence in myself and not have confidence in God and vice versa? I answered myself though. Then I asked my young ones around me that, is it the same to have confidence in yourself and have confidence in God? I would like someone to answer that?
The funniest thing is that the world tells us we need more confidence in ourselves which is termed self-confidence but God tells us that the most dangerous thing to do is to be confident in ourselves, that we are to be confident in Him.
Don’t forget we are born of God and not of this world and overcomers/conquerors in this world ( I John 5:4); by strength shall no man prevail so we don’t think like the world does, that talks about Self-confidence, we think and talk in terms of what I call Godfidence (confidence in God). I will be dwelling mainly on this kind of confidence.
1 John 5:4 Amplified Bible (AMP)
4 For [a]everyone born of God is victorious and overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has conquered and overcome the world—our [continuing, persistent] faith [in Jesus the Son of God].
The devil most of the time would always want us to see our achievements/successes/greatness from the angle of what we did by our strength and hereby drives us in the direction of self-confidence forgetting that whatever achievements/successes/greatness we have, all glory goes to God (Isa 42:8) thereby acknowledging and building our Godfidence(confidence in God).
Isaiah 42:8 Amplified Bible (AMP)
“I am the Lord, that is My Name;
My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved idols.
God never wants us to see anything based on our strength and he detests it when a man gives glory to himself. He doesn’t share His glory with man.
Self-confidence works and I’m not saying it is bad(for those in the world) but we don’t think in terms of that as Christians, we know it that if it is not for the spirit of God in us, we would do nothing and be nowhere. It is our confidence in God that makes us have wealth (Deut 8:18) and everything we could ever achieve in life. If you think you do, you already have what it takes inside of you to do anything you could ever want to do
Deuteronomy 8:18 Amplified Bible (AMP)
18 But you shall remember [with profound respect] the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore (solemnly promised) to your fathers, as it is this day.
Let us check what we have in Philippians 3:3
Philippians 3:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 for we [who are born-again have been reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, set apart for His purpose and] are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory and take pride and exult in Christ Jesus and place no confidence [in what we have or who we are] in the flesh—
Our confidence should never come from what we look like; the money we have, our jobs, titles, cars, clothes, degrees etc. because the way the world sees things is quite funny and our God sees things differently, our Father considers us on the basis of our heart
Godfidence(confidence in God) is the belief you can do a thing and knowing that you cannot do anything without Him(GOD). Let’s see Phil 4:13 AMP
Philippians 4:13 Amplified Bible (AMP)
13 I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]
The last part of this verse says I’m ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and CONFIDENCE
You wonder why you still get worried, anxious and fear that much, it is because your confidence in God is not strong enough (its shaky); you are only being self-confident. A self-confident man tries so hard to make everything work, so the only thing he does when things don’t work as planned is to get frustrated. Someone who is self-confident can never keep shut about him/herself. He/She can’t say a sentence without the use of “I”, “me” and “my” in it
But one thing about the God-confident people is that when things don’t go as planned, we don’t complain and get depressed and think God detests us, we simply continually dwell in the joy of the Lord which is our strength; our Godfidence. You know it that whatever good thing that happens to you, it’s not you, it is God working through you. Let’s see what we have in I Cor 1:30-31
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 Amplified Bible (AMP)
30 But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God [revealing His plan of salvation], and righteousness [making us acceptable to God], and sanctification [making us holy and setting us apart for God], and redemption [providing our ransom from the penalty for sin], 31 so then, as it is written [in Scripture], “He who boasts and glories, let him boast and glory in the Lord.”
Having established the difference between confidence in oneself and confidence in God, permit me to say that one thing that the devil is doing more to God’s children today is targeting the strength of God in them by destroying their joy. He replaces that joy with regrets of yesterday, worries/stress of today and anxieties of tomorrow. The effect of this is that one is kicked out of the state of rest that the joy initially puts one
It is very vital for Christians to know the place of rest that God has created us to operate in because there are certain manifestations we will never see if displaced out of rest. He never created us to operate in stress, worry and out of care. What your state of rest says about you is that ‘i believe in the finished works of Jesus on the cross, invariably I have my total confidence in God
Rest does not mean inactivity or to cease from activity. It simply means to do what you are supposed to be doing without being worried about anything. Now what is necessary for us to enter that place of rest and remain there is confidence. When we talk about how to practically enter into the state of rest and remain there, then it is vital to know how to have confidence in the finished works of Jesus Christ. A preacher once said that confidence is the missing substance of faith and it has an essential part to play in order to see things manifest our lives and that part is to keep us at rest. You are not going to be at rest if you are not confident. Let us check Heb 10:35
Hebrews 10:35 Amplified Bible (AMP)
35 Do not, therefore, fling away your [fearless] confidence, for it has a glorious andgreat reward.
36 For you have need of patient endurance [to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising], so that when you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised.
Do not cast away your confidence because it has great reward. Take note that the devil will come with a lot of things to cast down your confidence down. You see neighbours die, friends fall ill, sometimes money doesn’t come in as expected. Heb 10:36 says in order not to cast your confidence down, you need patience. Patience doesn’t mean putting up with something, it means constantly consistently remaining the same
What happens when all sort of things happen to knock you of rest? You have to develop confidence.
The question now is how do I develop confidence in God in the midst of being knocked out of that place of rest?
1) The importance of renewing your minds Rom 12:1-2
Most of the battle that we fight as Christians, we fight them in our minds. Please try to read the book Battlefield of the mind by Joyce Meyer. The most important thing you can do as a Christian is to renew your mind. Getting born again will never solve problems alone but renewing your minds is what is going to change your life. It is a daily and a lifetime thing. When you are renewing your minds, what happens is that you are changing your ideas and your way of thinking for God’s ideas and God’s way of thinking
Romans 12:1-2 Amplified Bible (AMP)
12 [a]Therefore I urge you, [b]brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be [c]transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].
2). Confessing the word: the mouth is a powerful tool in your arsenal. When you confess the word, you build your confidence. Let us see: Heb 10:23
Hebrews 10:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
23 Let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful [to His word];
What are you saying with your mouth? Don’t forget that when you decree a thing, it shall be established. A man of God says your profession is your confession, that is, you make a living by your confession. Watch what you say about yourself, you progressively become what you speak
3). Meditating on the word: this different from just merely reading the word, it means to ponder on the word. You should mediate on the word till you see yourself doing it; until you see the image of that thing and you see yourself acting it in your imagination. Go out with the word in the morning to ponder upon and you come back with a revelation. Meditation in the world is called worry; worry is the negative word of meditation. Worry is simply pondering on the wrong things. See Joshua 1:8
By meditating on the word, you will learn to deal with the affairs of this world I Tim 4:15
1 Timothy 4:15 Amplified Bible (AMP)
15 Practice and work hard on these things; be absorbed in them [completely occupied in your ministry], so that your progress will be evident to all.
4). Prayer Luke 18:1, James 5:16
You don’t pray to God to do what He is already done, that is not prayer but all day unbelief. Prayer of faith in the New Testament is what we should do and that is praying in confidence of the finished works of Jesus Christ
Luke 18:1 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Parables on Prayer
18 Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart,
James 5:16 Amplified Bible (AMP)
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].
When you are confident in God, you are at rest and when you are at rest the word manifests, and when the word manifests, you see God’s best
