THE POWER OF PRAISE

Praise is a powerful tool that many don’t use efficiently.

Praise is a powerful tool that many don’t use efficiently. Praise is also another way to communicate to God similar to prayer. As some may know there are

4 steps in prayer:

  1. Praise
  2. Confession
  3. Thanksgiving
  4. Intercession

Praise is the first tool to summon God’s presence in our midst. But Praise goes beyond just that. Look at David, for example, a man who wrote the most of Psalms in honour of God. He praised and worshipped him during his situations, even when he was scared for his life.

Because of this David is known as a man after God’s heart.

Praise says:

  • Thank you, God, for what you are doing
  • Thank you, God, for what you are about to do
  • Thank you, God, for what you have done
  • Thank you for I know you are mighty and will see me through this situation

One thing that praise does is to tell God, no matter the situation – good or bad. You are still God. That is profound! it recognises that God is sovereign and he is all-powerful.

But, the important thing about Praise is, your heart posture needs to be focused on God. You have to prepare your mind and heart so it can be empty for God to fill it up.

I do this a lot as a worship leader at my church. I understood the importance of connecting oneself to God and clearing out anything that will stop my praise from being accepted by him

You may be singing a song and crying out in tears but, where exactly is your heart? Does it recognise Jesus as Lord of all? or is there an idol taking over that spot?

God looks at the heart. This is seen in

1 Samuel 16:7

English Standard Version (ESV)

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Some of us are very good at faking things and pretending that we are all good when we are not. But let us understand that you can still praise God for that situation and thank him in advance for where he is taking you to

Praising him for the promises he has over your life and reminding yourself of his promises. You can lie to yourself but, you can never lie to God. Sometimes, our breakthroughs lie in how we present our challenges to God. Do we see that he is in control? Do we see him in our boat? Or have we now created an idol out of our challenges?

Daniel 3:16-20 New International Version (NIV)

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.

17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[a] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were told to serve God’s of King Nebuchadnezzar but they refused. In Daniel 3, they still refused to serve any other God aside from God

Even if he didn’t deliver them from the furnace. How many of us can say that? “God, even if this cup of sorrow [insert any challenge] doesn’t pass me by, you still remain God”

Praises help us remember the goodness of God in our lives. It allows us to confess that no matter our situation, we will serve him. Similar to what Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego confessed.

By doing so, it allowed them to see where God stands in their situation and not to place anything above him.

Praise brings down the favour and mercy of God into your life. While praising, you draw down the presence of God as you allow him to dwell in your midst. And where the presence of God is, there you will find favour.

In summary, Praise helps remind you that God is in the storm with you. It brings you closer to him. But, it is important for you to check the posture of your heart and pull down anything sitting on the throne of your heart that isn’t God
